Career
Rekha began acting in 1999 with the Kannada film “Operation Jackpot Nalli C.I.D 999.” Following that, she appeared in the Telugu film “Amma Kosam.” Her Hindi cinema debut was with the film “Sawan Bhadon.”
She had to learn Hindi for the movie because she didn’t speak it proficiently. The film was a box office success, and it helped Rekha establish herself as an actress. She later appeared in commercially successful films such as “Kahani Kismat Ki,” “Ghar,” “Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye,” “Raampur Ka Lakshman,” “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar” and “ Anjaane.”
In 1980, she appeared in a comedy movie which was named “Khubsoorat.” Her performance in the film earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Actress. The following year, she appeared in “Umrao Jaan.” Her portrayal of ‘Umrao’ is widely regarded as one of her best performances, earning her a National Award for Best Actress.
Rekha appeared in a number of films with Amitabh Bachchan, the majority of which were box office smashes. They showed up in “Silsila,” one of the most sensational films, in 1981, in which Rekha played Bachchan’s romantic lead and his real-life wife, Jaya Bhaduri, played his wife. It was their last movie together.
Not only did she act, but she also provided an audio for other veteran actresses. In Yaarana, she dubbed for Neetu Singh, and in Waaris, she dubbed for Smita Patil.
R. D. Burman also encouraged Rekha to try her hand at singing. She performed two songs in her film “Khoobsurat.”
Controversies
1. As per her biography, Rekha: The Untold Story, her husband, Mukesh Agarwal, suffered from chronic depression and also was seeing a psychiatrist for it. Mukesh’s bizarre behavior caused cracks to appear in their marriage just after 7 months of marriage. On 2 October 1990, a year after their marriage, Mukesh committed suicide by hanging himself from his bedroom’s ceiling fan, prompting people to blame Rekha for the tragedy and labelling her a “man-eater witch.”
2. Rekha’s relationship with Vinod Mehra was in controversy too. It was also believed that the couple married in a secret ceremony in Kolkata, but when Vinod brought Rekha to his house, his mother treated her hostilely. When Rekha attempted to seek her blessings, she pushed her away. She continued to humiliate and abuse Rekha, even refusing to let her enter the house. Vinod attempted to keep the situation under control, but his mother became so agitated that she removed her sandals and nearly assaulted Rekha with them.
3. Rekha was so excited to see Hrithik Roshan on the red carpet of an award ceremony that when she leaned in to welcome him, she almost had an unintended lip-lock.
4. Rekha when she was 15, became embroiled in a controversy while filming her ‘supposed’ debut film, Anjana Safar. According to an extract from Rekha’s biography, the scene involving Rekha and the male lead, Biswajeet Chatterjee, was intended to be a brief romantic scene with no intimate or offensive actions. However, as soon as the camera started rolling, Biswajeet grabbed Rekha and began to smooch her. The director kept shouting “cut,” but the lead actor was unfazed. According to the biography, both the actor and the director scheduled this heinous act for their commercial and personal gain.
