Abel Tesfaye was born in Toronto, Ontario, on February 16, 1990. He is the child of Samrawit Hailu and Makkonen Tesfaye, who separated when he was only a few years old. At an early age, he identified his father as Samrawit Hailu, but he claimed that he was not an abusive man. In his childhood, he lived with his grandmother and used to learn Amharic, which he spoke with his mother. He also attended services at the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. His adolescence was not common because at the age of eleven he began smoking and intaking drugs.

In 2010, Tesfaye met Rose,a producer having an idea for a dark contemporary R&B musical project .
