Early Life
Sunil Arora was born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab on 13, April 1956. He did his BA Honors in English and Master’s in English In Chandigarh from Punjab University. Sunil Arora’s father is a retired account officer of the Indian Railways and his mother has worked in DAV College, Hoshiarpur. He has 2 brothers. One of them is an IAS officer and the other is a Diplomat.
Career
Sunil Arora worked as the Secretary of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan from 1993 to 1998. He then served as the Joint Secretary of M/O Civil Aviation in 1999 for 3 years. He then became the Principle Secretary of Vasundra Raje, the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan and served from 2005 to 2008. He became the chairman and MD of RIICO in 2009. He became the Secretary of Minister of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, Youth Affairs and Sports in 2014. He also served as the Secretary of Minister of Information and Broadcasting in 2015. In 2017, he became the Election Commissioner of India. Then he was appointed as Chief Election Commissioner of India in 2018.
Controversy
In 2009, an audio clip of a conversation was leaked between lobbyist Niira Radira and Sunil Arora in which Sunil talked of corruption in the Indian judiciary. The name of Y.K Sabharwal, the former CJI, was also listed by him as one of India’s corrupt judges.
