Shruti Haasan was born in Madras (now Chennai) to actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika Thakur. Her father is a Tamilian. Her younger sister Akshara Haasan is also an actress. Her cousins are actresses Anu Hasan and Suhasini Maniratnam. Haasan did her schooling from Lady Andal school in Chennai and moved to Mumbai to study psychology at St. Andrew’s College.
Shruti focused on cinema and music, and eventually went to US to continue to learn music at the Musicians Institute in California.

Shruti’s first appearance in a feature film was a cameo role as the daughter of Vallabhbhai Patel in the Tamil-Hindi bilingual film Hey Ram, based on a murder attempt on Mahatma Gandhi, directed by her father Kamal Haasan. After rejecting many film offers, reports suggested that in 2007 Shruti was set to make her actual acting debut in 2008 with a film opposite Madhavan named Endrendrum Punnagai, the film was stalled before production began.
She made her lead actor debut in Bollywood in the 2009 multi-star Hindi film, “Luck”. His childhood friend, Imran Khan, who was also one of the actors in the film, suggested his name to the directors of this film.
