Marie-Andree Leclerc and Charles Sobhraj
Marie when to Kashmir, India where she met Alain Gauthier who introduced himself as a photojournalist in Paris Match magazine. Alain Gauthier was Charles Sobhraj, the serial killer and fraudster in reality. Marie fell in love with Charles during the trip. Charles became a guide to Marie in India and by the end of the trip, Marie made a promise to Charles about returning to Asia to see him.
After Marie returned to Levis, she received calls and a love letter from Charles in which he told her that he loved her and wanted to marry Marie and asked her to come to Bangkok to meet Charles.
Marie left her job and her boyfriend in the year 1975 and she left for Thailand on the plane ticket sent by Charles.
Thailand Murders
Marie became a follower and puppet of Charles and helped him in his scams.
In the year 1975, Charles committed his first known murder because others were his accomplices who threatened Charles of exposing his crime. His first victim was a woman named Teresa Knowlton, who was found drowned on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand near Pattaya City. Teresa’s death was believed to be accidental drowning until the autopsy reports proved that she was murdered.
A Turk man named ‘Vitali Hakim’ was found burnt on the roads of Pattaya Resort where Charles and his members used to stay.
Nepal & India Murders
In 1975 in Kathmandu, Charles murdered American Connie Bronzich and Canadian Laurent Carriere. Their bodies were found in a field near the Nepalese capital. Marie and Charles then returned to Thailand after Charles was suspected of murders.
Both of them then fled to Bombay, India where they murdered Israeli scholar Avoni Jacob to take his passport after which they fled to Singapore with his passport and then returned to India and then to Thailand in 1976.
In India Marie and Charles were joined by many Indians, like Ajay Chowdhury who was sent to collect gems and was seen giving gems to Charles. This was the last time Ajay was spotted.
Barbara Smith and Mary Ellen Eather also joined Marie and Charles. Later Charles with his three women gang attacked a Frenchwoman Jean-Luc Salomon, who was poisoned during the robbery and left to die.
In July 1976, Charles, Marie along with their two companions were arrested by the Delhi Police.
Imprisonment & Trial
After being arrested they were interrogated and during the interrogation, Barbara and Ellen accepted their crimes and were sent to the Tihar Jail in Delhi.
Marie was accused of being involved in the murder of Avoni Jacob and Jean-Luc Salomon. Later she was acquitted of murdering Jean-Luc but was told to remain in the jail because Jacob’s murder trials were pending.
Marie and Charles were convicted of the murder of Avoni Jacob. Maries was found to be guilty of drugging students and she was sentenced to twelve years in prison. She appealed the judgment and was released but was not allowed to leave the country. Later she was allowed to return to Canada.
Death
In the year 1983, when Marie was on parole, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and given permission to go to Canada on the condition that she reported to the High Commission of India in Ottawa once every three months and will return to India for her trials as long as her health permits.
On April 20, 1984, at the age of 38, she died of Cancer at Hotel Dieu Hospital of Levis.
