Marcus Freeman (born January 10, 1986) is the current head coach of the University of Notre Dame. He was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Notre Dame in 2021. Freeman previously worked as an assistant coach at the University of Cincinnati, Purdue University, Kent State University, and Ohio State University.
Freeman attended Ohio State and was selected in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. He has also played for the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Texans.
Marcus Freeman’s Childhood
His father, Michael Freeman, met his mother, Chong, while serving in the South Korean Air Force. Marcus was born in Fairborn, Ohio, at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center. Michael Jr. is his older brother. Marcus attended Wayne High School while growing up in Huber Heights.
As a senior at Wayne High School in Huber Heights, Ohio, Freeman was considered one of the state’s top three overall prospects and was named to the Parade All-America team. He had 127 tackles, four sacks, three forced fumbles, and three recovered fumbles as a senior. He had 152 tackles, 29 behind the line of scrimmage, and eight sacks as a junior. Freeman started four years and was twice named to the All-Ohio first team. He also ran track and field, competing in the 4100-meter relay and throwing the shot put and discus.
Career
Marcus Freeman played 51 games for Ohio State University between 2004 and 2008. (37 starts). He appeared in 26 games as a weak-side linebacker and 11 as a strong-side linebacker, earning him two Big Ten Second Team honours. He had 268 tackles (140 solo), 21.5 TFLs, 6.0 sacks, 15 PBUs, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in his career.
