Harivansh Rai Bachchan (27 November 1907- 18 January 2003) was Indian poet of the Nayi Kavita literary movement ( romantic upsurge) was known for his early 20th century among the Hindi literature. Many people had addressed him as a Hindi Kavi Sammelan poet. He was married to a social activist, Teji Bachchan, father of famous actor Amitabh Bachchan and also the grandfather of Abhishek Bachchan. He was honored with an award in 1976 that is Padma Bhushan for rendering his services towards the Hindi literature.
Early life:
he was born in Babupatti village of United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, at British raj on 27 November 1907. At the Allahabad University he used to teach English and after that he spent his two years at St Catharine’s college, Cambridge, and also he completed his PhD on W.B Yeats. he decided to use his pen name that is Bachchan which means “child” instead of Shrivastava when he started to write Hindi poetry.
Writing Career:
Mostly his poets were written in Hindi languages which is known as Hindustani, Awadhi. Bachchan had incorporated with the Hindustani Vocabulary which was written in Devanagari script. He was very much founded of Persian script but couldn’t able to read so he decided to learn. He started reading the Omar Khayyam poetry which was written in Persian and Urdu and the poems had left him good impact on it.
Works used in movies:
Most of his works were used in either in movies or in songs. for instance, Agneepath was his most greatest work in 1990 were his own son had worked in this movies that is Amitabh Bachchan and later in 2012 Hrithik Roshan had made a remake of it.

In 1935 he published “madhushala” The house of Wine which is a verse lyrical poem which was written and remembered as a 142 of his poem. Subsequently it was also translated in English and a number of languages. Within a few days it had catch the eye of people as slowly the people went craze about the poems that is “Madhubaala”. he also read many poems among the large audience and his last poem was “Ek November 1984” as it was based on Indira Gandhi’s assassination .
Awards and Recognition:
Harivansh Rai Bachchan was nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1966 and at the same time in 1969 he also received Sathiya Akademi Award. he was also awarded as a Padma Bhushan in recognition for contributing to Hindi literature. The Uttar Pradesh government also conferred him the “Yash Bharati” samman in 1994.
