Early Life

Steven Robert Dahl was born on the 20th of November, 1954, in California.

Dahl is the son of Roger and Carol Dahl.

In 9th grade, he started hanging around the local underground radio station, KPPC, in California.

When he was 16 years old, he started working at the radio station full-time until he dropped out of high school.

He stated: I convinced my parents and the school that I would do an independent work-study thing. I never got around to it.”

When he was 18, he met and married the woman of his dreams.

Career

When Steve Dahl was a kid, he would hang around his local underground radio station, and he began working there when he turned 16.

However, after he’d turned 18, he became discouraged after radio executives told him his voice was too high for radio.

Not wanting to have one of the lowest-paying jobs in America, he tried becoming a recording engineer, but this gig didn’t get him anywhere.

So, he applied for a radio job with WABX in Detroit, where he was hired to host the station’s morning show.

Becoming A Radio Star

In 1978, Steve Dahl left Detroit and began working at WDAI in Chicago on Steve Dahl’s Rude Awakening Show.

However, the show never attracted much attention, and Dahl was fired when the station changed from rock to disco.

After being unemployed for a brief stint, Dahl landed a job with WLUP, where he met the overnight DJ Garry Meier.

In response to his firing from WDAI, Dahl and Meier began mocking disco music, even producing a parody of Rod Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy.”

Around the same time, the pair created Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park, where they collected disco records and blew them up.

However, people stormed the field, set fires, and tore up seats in the stands, leading to the cancellation of the following baseball game.

Fortunately for Dahl, the incident led to his becoming a national name, and his popularity skyrocketed.

Collaborations & WCKG

Steve Dahl continued collaborating with Garry Meier into the 1980s, and they won a local Emmy award for the comedy spoof Greetings from Graceland.

The pair briefly had their morning TV show, It’s Too Early, though it was canceled after four weeks because it was unsuitable for children.

In 1989, Dahl broadcast his vasectomy from a urologist’s office in Indiana, which caused his ratings to jump from seventh to third place.

Around the same time, Howard Stern began listening to Dahl’s broadcasts, which he credits for helping him create his on-air style.

Steve and Gerry finally split in 1993 following Dahl making remarks about Meier’s new wife while they were on their honeymoon.

After the split, Dahl moved to WCKG for an afternoon show and teamed up with Buzz Kilman, who became his newsman.

Dahl’s Recent Work

In 2007, Steve Dahl began broadcasting with JackFm as the station’s only live personality, though it ended a year later.

He moved back to WLS and remained with the station until October 2018, when he hosted his final show.

However, along with his radio career, Dahl also started his own podcast in 2009 and began the Steve Dahl Network soon after.

Dahl has even shown off his acting chops now and again and had a minor role alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in Grandview U.S.A.

He has also joined Bonnie Hunt in I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With and Outing Riley.

In 2013, he was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame alongside his former partner Garry Meier.

Favorite Quotes from Steve Dahl

“We were letting off a little steam. We were relaxing in our corduroy jeans and T-shirts, and we were not quite ready to dress for success or give up our clattering soundtrack for disco beats.” – Steve Dahl

“Never wanted to mount or lead a social movement. I wanted to entertain and to provide a release for kids who had too little money and too much awkwardness for the dance world. I wanted to say, ‘The music you revere is great, and you are okay just as you are.” – Steve Dahl

“On the one hand, it was the first time I saw any sort of citywide proof that I was catching on here. I’d done OK… It was tangible proof that we were popular and we were doing something right.” – Steve Dahl

“I didn’t want to do it because I didn’t think anybody would show up. The two arrived before the first game, signed a few posters, and then went upstairs to have dinner and drinks. The crowd was average-sized, at about 10,000 people.” – Steve Dahl

“I was up all night trying to figure out what to do the next day. Didn’t have any sort of exalted or celebratory night. I just thought, ‘I’m gonna get f—— fired over this. Look at all this success I’ve had, and I’m going to get fired.’” – Steve Dahl
