Kimmo Samuel Timonen was born March 18, 1975, in Kuopio, Finland.

Timonen, who was 17 years old, was the youngest player to represent Finland at the IIHF World Junior Championships in 1993. With 44 shots, he had the second-highest shot total during the competition.

He was chosen by the Los Angeles Kings in the 250th overall slot of the 10th round of the 1993 NHL Draft.

Despite his lack of club experience, through the 1997–98 season, the Kuopio, Finland, native played for his native Finland.

Timonen was a member of Finland’s bronze-medal Olympic squad in Nagano and the Kings moved him, along with Jan Vopat, to the Nashville Predators shortly after the Olympics.
