Richard was enrolled into Athol Murray College of Notre Dame Boarding school at age 14 and met Vincent Lecavalier while he was participating in the schools ice hockey program.

They later joined the Rimouski Océanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Tampa Bay Lightning as teammates.

Richards had 82 assists and 115 points in the year leading up to his draft, and the Tampa Bay Lightning selected him in the third round, 64th overall, of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
