Early Life and Career
On 12 April 1952, in the Mazhabi Sikh community at Jandwala Bhimeshah in Ferozepur, Punjab, Bhai Nirmal Singh was born. In 1976, he graduated from Shaheed Missionary College, Amritsar, with a Gurmat Sangeet Diploma. Professionally he was a teacher of music at Gurmat College in Rishikesh in 1977-78 and later taught at Shaheed Sikh Missionary College in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. He began serving as Hazoori Ragi in Darbar Sahib in 1979. At all five Takhts, separate historical Gurdwaras throughout South Asia and in 71 nations, he performed Kirtan. Bhai Sahib was a highly esteemed Ragi with knowledge of all Guru Granth Sahib’s 31 Raags.
In 2009, Bhai Nirmal Singh Khalsa got the Padma Shri award, which is the fourth highest civil award in the Republic of India, for services in the field of arts. He was the first Hazoori Ragi to be awarded this prize.
Death
Nirmal Singh Khalsa died at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar on 2 April 2020 due to cardiac arrest after testing positive for coronavirus disease in 2019. His body was cremated in Amritsar’s Fatehgarh Shukarchak village.
Facts
He had knowledge of all of the 31 Raagas of Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in Gurbani. He has appeared in over 50 countries with Kirtans.
He was the first to win the Padma Shri award for hazoori raagi.
