Early Life
A.R Rahman has did his schooling from Padma Seshadri Bal Bhavan, Chennai but he dropped out of school to support his family financially but his passion for music led him to a scholarship to study at his college degree from Christian Trinity College of Music, Oxford University, United Kingdom. His Educational Qualification involves Degree in Western Classical Music. His father R.K. Shekhar was a Music Composer. His mother named is Kareema Beegum. He is the only sole earning source of his family as his father died at early of his childhood when he was only 9 years old. Then he was raised by his mother.
Rahman is married to Saira Banu and has three children. He played the keyboard and piano, the harmonium and the guitar. His early training began in music under Master Dhanraj.
Career
Rahman began his own music recordings and mixing studio attached to the backyard of his house called the Panchathan Record Inn, which was developed into India’s most advanced recording studio in the year 1992. He was the part of band called Roots ” from the period of 1984 to 1988 . Also, he played keyboard for Kannada films during the same period of time. Thereafter, he had also a part of the rock band called “Nemesis Avenue”, where he worked as a producer-arranger and also performed for a concert ‘Jive Live’. He composed various short songs for Ad commercials from which the first among them was Alwyn’s new trendy range of watches and within 5 years he composed around 500 of them. His very first film on which he composed music was Mohan Lal starrer Yodha(1992), a Malayalam film. He became the world’s all-time top selling recording artist by 2004 and sold almost 200 million cassettes and 150 million recordings of his soundtracks.
He released the album “Vande Mataram” a tribute to our motherland. The album was released simultaneously across the world in 28 countries, in which Rahman himself performed in New Delhi to a audience and honorable Prime Minister. He won Oscar for the song “Jai Ho” which was initially composed for the Bollywood Song “Yuvvraaj” but later it became a part of Slumdog Millioniare in the same year 2008. He gained global prominence with the extraordinary success of his score for “Slumdog Millionaire” for which he won 8 academy awards including two for Rahman, for Best Score and Best Song.
In 2009, he was also named by Times Magazine one of the most influential people in the world. Rahman has expanded his focus to newer horizons like setting up the A R Rahman Foundation to help poor and underprivileged children. Rahman has also announced initiatives to establish a tradition in western classical music in India and embarked on an ambitious venture to set up the KM Music Conservatory and the KM Music Symphony Orchestra based out of Chennai, India. He is also a brand ambassador of the WHO’s “Stop TB Partnership” and also supports “Save the Child” in India.
